About
Ali Denno, (She/Her)
RCC #21746
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. At Core Stories, I collaborate with every client to understand the power of their story, words, narrative, and how these impact their current-day mental health. This space can be where you feel your story is heard, honoured, and explored.
My work and volunteer experiences include peer support for those in recovery from eating disorders at The Looking Glass Foundation, one-on-one counselling at Jewish Family Services, and facilitating therapeutic creative writing workshops on grief and loss, finding community, and anxiety. This work has informed my areas of practice in anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, shame and guilt, disorded eating, burnout, grief and loss, loneliness, and processing life changes and transitions. I currently support clients who have been through motor vehicle accidents and are experiencing chronic pain and/or mild traumatic brain injuries within a trauma informed practice and space. I use several appraoches in my therapeutic work and it varies according to the client’s needs, these include Adlerian therapy, Narrative therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Body-Centred, and Trauma Informed.
I grew up writing. It provided me with a creative and emotional outlet. Through my writing I was able to dive into my imagination and begin to understand myself on a deeper level. These experiences of writing, creativity, and reflection, inform who I am as a counsellor, but there are many ways expressive arts enter my practice including writing, drawing, painting, photography, music, film, and books. In the past, I have worked with clients by bringing in memes, horror films, song lyrics, poetry, personal writing, and more. I am very open to other creative outlets that can be brought into the counselling space.
When I am not in the counselling space, you can find me at the movies, embroidering in the backyard with my cat, camping, and discussing horror movies and novels!
Education
My educational journey reflects my current day practices as a counsellor. I received an Associate’s Degree in Creative Writing from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and my Masters of Counselling from Adler University.
I am excited to incorporate what I have learned throughout my education and in my own personal journey, which has included a variety of expressive arts (writing, photography, painting, drawing), in the delivery of counselling services. I believe that talk therapy alongside expressive arts creates spaces for more deeply exploring and understanding parts of ourselves that are at times hard to put words to.
